Etiquette in the dojo
Menu
Etiquette in a dojo consists of certain rules of good behavior and respect toward the dojo, the instructor, and the art of Aikido, and must be followed by all students, whether new or experienced.
Some of these are as follows:
- Bow when entering or leaving the dojo.
- Remove your shoes when entering the dojo and wash your feet before stepping onto the tatami.
The tatami is cleaned with dentol before every class to ensure the safety and hygiene of all practitioners, and it is everyone’s responsibility to participate in this. - Training begins and ends with a formal ceremony. It is important to be on time in order to participate in it. If you are late, you may enter the tatami after the warm-up is complete.
- If you need to ask Sensei a question, go to him; do not call him over to you, disturbing the others.
- When receiving personal instruction, sit in the seiza position and watch. Once it is finished, bow and continue your training.
- The purpose of your presence is your training. Do not attempt to impose your opinions.
- If you know the technique being taught and your training partner does not, you may guide them, but do not correct them. Only the Sensei or a black belt instructor can do this safely.
- All types of jewelry on your body are prohibited to prevent injuries.
- Please do not leave personal belongings at the school, such as uniforms, slippers, towels, etc.
